foundations

Start with the
body.

There are five layers in the way I was taught the body. The first is the food-built one — the अन्नमय कोश. Every real practice begins here, for a reason I learned the hard way.

the five sheaths

Where you actually live, layer by layer

The lineage describes you as five कोश — sheaths — wrapped around each other. The physical body (अन्नमय). The energetic body of breath and life (प्राणमय). The mental body of thought and feeling (मनोमय). The intuitive body that knows before thought (विज्ञानमय). And the body of pure being (आनन्दमय).

They are not separate. A pain in the first finds its way to all the others. A peace in the last shows up in the first as ease.

why we begin at the outermost

You cannot quiet a mind in a body that hurts

If your back is in spasm, no breath work will calm you. If your hips have not moved in weeks, sitting to meditate is a small torture. The mind cannot soften before the body it lives in does. So we begin where you can reach — the physical layer.

Gentle movement, simple stretching, the joints opening one by one. Nothing strenuous. Just the body remembering it is allowed to move.

then the next layer arrives on its own

Body, breath, prana — in that order

When the body begins to open, the breath deepens on its own. You did not have to force it. When the breath deepens, the thinking slows. You did not have to fight it. This is the sequence I was taught, and it is still the truest one I know — body, breath, प्राण. Each layer leads to the next.

So the gentlest practice is also the most efficient. Begin with the body, and the rest follows you home.

The shortest road to a quiet mind runs through the body. Always has.
